About Cal R
Cal R is a study I drew after a number of encounters with the inspirational architecture of Santiago Calatrava, perhaps especially at the Olympic park In Barcelona, where he seems to have built a piece of the future, in the shape of his extraordinary Torre Telefónica, in amongst a set of post modern horrors.
Combining natural forms with rib like construction methods, the work progresses the idea of shaping a sculptural piece for the wall by laser cutting the mount, and in so doing moves away from the traditional convention of rectilinear artworks, to some extent becoming partially sculptural in itself.
Revisiting ideas I first tried with Shellac, I’ve also decoupled the colour work from the tonal study, a technique that unlocks the colours from their original positions, and allows them to flow freely across the surface, with scant regard for the underlying forms that originally contained them.
