XGen 2
XGen 2 is a series of 6 drawings; the works represent the second set of studies from an ongoing series exploring, and riffing on, the energy contained within a simple X form.

Hive / duality : singularity
Hive is a ten colour archival pigment print on 305gsm 100% cotton Hahnemühle fine art paper, cutout by hand and backed onto a sheet of 300gsm Somerset Satin. The work can be supplied unframed, or framed and ready to hang. I tend to use fairly minimal glazed and painted or stained tulipwood frames, and float mount the work without a window mount.

interStella
interStella is a series of 16 drawings; a kind of mash up of some geometries I’ve been studying; an exploration and complication of the maths underlying the early works of American legend Frank Stella.

Lyric SV
The Lyric SV works, or systematic variations, progress the studies further using a new, more liquid, more lyrical, drawing technique, that I hope creates a painterly quality.
ReVOX / masked
ReVOX / masked was made in response to the ongoing debate about the nature of the digital vs the haptic, it’s a traditional etching pulled on a Victorian press by Ros Ford at BV Studios.

Flow / turquoise base
In 2018 I decided to create a new Flow variation, with a fairly solid colour base. To my eye the gouache like quality of the pigment inks make the colours really sing.

Millefiori DMG
Millefiori / DMG is the next logical, or perhaps illogical, step towards trying to capture some of the light, life and vibrancy that you will find in studio glass, inspired by a visit to Murano, and the millefiori works made there.

Dazzle / 12 bar crop
The Dazzle piece I drew for Current at Catto seemed to offer an opportunity to generate a smaller work on paper as well. So after a little further experimentation, I made this study from the 12 bars that form the central core of the composition.

Arpeggi / FOLIO
The Arpeggi series of drawings seemed to lend itself particularly well to the idea of being recoloured, and so after some experimentation, I settled on the idea of making six variants, which would be presented in a clam shell folio.

Torsion / primer
Torsion / primer is a riff or variation on the original understudies for Torsion / REZ, which uses ’torqued’ versions of these forms to make the more complex larger works on Plexiglass.

Klint / reDux
Le Klint studio is an inspiration to anyone who loves paper folding, contemporary design, and light. So of course I couldn’t resist riffing on a variant of their origami like geometries for a new set of works on paper in 2015.

April 2015
Arpeggi / solus
The Arpeggi studies use multiple sculptural forms, and hangs them on a grid redolent of a musical stave. During the drawing process it became apparent that each individual component could also have a life of its own, and hence the Solus studies were editioned.

Motorik / TWO / chromatic shift
Motorik endeavours to capture a complex syncopated rhythm as a series of dismantled modular components, laid out on a grid as if it were a sheet of music, or an arrangement of different pulses, or beats.

Psyche D / EvH
I drew Psyche D / EvH (event horizon) in 2017 for Current at Catto. It’s a wildly complex drawing, that freewheeled out of control as it went on. It’s derived from an artichoke like gold and blue study, with an ultramarine disc at its core.

Experimental print club
Over recent years I’ve been quietly making work for a side project, my Experimental Print Club. It’s funded by a monthly subscription, with club members receiving at least four unique new works by post each year.
