About Flow

Drawing Flow was a breakthrough moment for me. It was the first piece that spoke directly to the idea of drawing glass, using translucent glazes, and layers of transparencies, that in some way capture the excitement of seeing a great piece of studio glass, or contemporary stained glass, in an environment where light plays across and through the surfaces.

The idea of trying to catch some of that light and drama in a piece for the wall has been something I’ve been trying to achieve ever since. It comes down to the way the colours are lit, the use of shadow and highlight, and of course the metallic base paper and plexiglass I use to help bounce light back into the room.

Flow takes the smallest of glass objects, a child’s marble, and blows it up, with repetition, to make a kind of glazed Op piece that I hope captures a singular lyrical movement as it rises from left to right across the image, twisting and deforming as it does so. Initially, I made the silver base and deep base versions, swiftly followed by the triptych, silvered and black variants.

It’s become a series that I keep returning to, almost like the shuffle play on Spotify that keeps coming back to the original artist choice every fifth play.

Flow / SQ / cerulean silvered is one of a pair of smaller studies I made, alongside Flow / SQ / cerulean base, partly in response to a beautiful small Serpentine print I have here, by Bridget Riley. She made an edition of 200, and sold them on the opening morning of a show at the Serpentine Gallery, and as a fan, I duly queued up to buy one, I have #126 I think. It’s a modest square print, that holds a space on the wall next to the window in my living room, a small beacon that illuminates my days and evenings, and has been doing so for 25 years or so.
