About Solaris
Solaris was the second circular drawing or tondo I made using the idea of ’systematic variations’ to modulate the linework in order to create a piece that would be looser, less overtly rigorous, and perhaps more random than previous works have been.
There’s a tension between the rigour of the mathematical systems underlying the drawing, and the looseness of haptic mark making on the surface, that is of real interest here. Alongside the two highly worked colour palettes that I hope create enough interest to hold the viewer’s attention over a long period of time.
Artworks by their nature are singular objects that hopefully may be able to hold some part of our attention, if only partially, as we encounter them daily in our homes, for years and decades, perhaps even over a whole lifetime.
Many of the pieces I live with here have been catching my eye for years, and it is therefore or real interest to explore whether that relationship with an artwork, in the home, may be enhanced by using a depth of detail and intensity of line in the drawing, that hopefully will repay the viewer's attention over the longer term.
In that sense, artworks are quite unusual objects, with an ability to travel through the decades, unlike many of the other goods that we may acquire along the way, creating an opportunity for a longer term view of how they function, and how they may inhabit a space.
It's a position that demands some thought provoking questions about longevity, and how objects can inform our relationship with a specific place, and time.
