SysVar / ONE / pearlescent and SysVar / TWO / cerulean lacquer are the first two systematic variation drawings I made, alongside an associated Print Club edition.
About SysVar
SysVar TWO takes on a far looser approach to the idea of using a series of modular variations to rework a particular study. There’s a fluidity to the linework, which is contrasted with vertically placed blocks of colour across the base of the image.
I guess the idea of the variation stems from a natural love of the set, the series and perhaps even the bigger idea of a collection.
Working in sets has an immense appeal I think, from series of bookplates, to Japanese print sets like Hokusai's 36 views of Mount Fuji, or Warhol’s electric chair series, there’s something really interesting about working on a number of sequential but differentiated images, if only to see what you can achieve if you kick them around hard enough.
This second SysVar edition uses the same size, format and under drawing as SysVar / ONE, but then varies it with a series of looser, more liquid over marks and recolourations.
From here I moved the techniques on to the Rubicon and Solaris editions, each of which incorporates a similar approach to technique, but on quite different compositions.
