About Dazzle / 12 bar crop

Dazzle became one of the main centrepieces of my 2017 Current at Catto show. At 200cm wide, it's intended to be long enough to walk past, potentially viewing the work in detailed sections as you pass, rather than taking the whole work in at a single glance. An idea that might work particularly well in a corridor or hallway.

Since my first beBop study, one of the many strands I’ve been working with has been the idea of making pieces that are big enough to walk past, and engage with in sections, in much the same way that a Chinese scroll painting is intended to be revealed and viewed, one part at at time.

So it seemed entirely plausible that I could crop a shorter passage from the whole, a kind of chapter if you like, that could be read as a standalone piece. After some experimentation, it seemed quite clear that the central 12 bars would make for the best crop, and so I edited that section for this Print Club edition, a new 10 colour pigment print on the 100% cotton Somerset paper.

Dazzle, in the studio & in situ

Print Club blog, December 21st, 2017

“…I’ve just completed making, packing and sending my Experimental Print Club editions #6 and #7 with MyHermes. I hope they'll arrive with you sometime over the holidays, and that the work will add a little colour to the season…

…Edition #6 is a good sized version of my recent Dazzle drawing, in yellows and blues, and cropped to 12 bars, which I think has a certain sparkle about it. Edition #7 is an exploratory study that I made whilst working on Lyric SV, for my recent Catto Gallery show. I've refashioned it here with some quite earthy winter tones, and entitled it Lyric / undertow, as it is very much an under drawing for the final works. Additionally, I've included a 2017 show catalogue featuring many of the drawings I've made this year, simply entitled Current

…Coming up. I'm delighted to have works included at The London Art Fair next year, they'll be exhibited by TAG Fine Arts. In particular we'll be exhibiting Motorik / TWO / chromatic shift on the ground floor of the fair, which is a real thrill…

…So if you're in London between the 17th and 21st January, and you'd like a free pass, please do let me know, and I'll get your name put on the door. I'll also be visiting the fair myself, so if you'd like to meet for a coffee, email me, and I'll let you know which day I'll be there…”

About the Print Club

If you’d like to receive three or four exclusive new editions in the post each year, alongside personal news and views from the studio, and invitations to shows and fairs, please do consider becoming a member of my Experimental Print Club. You can join or leave the club at any time, with absolutely no obligation to stay any longer than you want to.

New works are sent out somewhat sporadically throughout the year, often in line with the changing seasons. Each piece is unique, exclusive, and only available on the day it’s editioned, the size of the edition being determined by the number of members on the day.

I hope the club presents a more personal and intriguing way to connect with the studio, by creating a platform for collecting engaging new works for your home. The club is hosted online here, and I send out fairly regular blog posts and emails about the work too. I’d like to think that it’s an interesting proposition!

Membership is currently priced at £36 per month inc. UK delivery, or £42 for an international address.
