About Aquiline
I drew aquiline in 2007/8, ahead of a London show with Anna Gillespie, CODA on Cork Street.
I set the piece up to have multiple vanishing points, the first of many studies in which the basic laws of three point perspective are bent out of shape to enhance the drama in the drawings. I love the idea that digital systems allow you to adjust and edit the basic rules of perspective to get extra dynamism, extra energy, into the work.
I felt the resulting image seemed to contain some kind of visual reference to the carved stone angel wings you can see on Victorian gothic tombs and statuary, in any one of the big London cemeteries that I’ve spent many happy hours wandering amongst, but most notably Abney Park, back in the early nineties when I lived just above Dalston Junction.
The original crimson drawing omits the inked cerulean overlay, and as such is either more serenely minimal, or less overtly dramatic, depending on your point of view.
