About beBop

BeBop is a term used to define a style of vocalisation that is both free form, and spontaneous, and as with many of the drawings, spontaneity lies at the heart of what is of real interest with the mark making in this study, and how that spontaneity can be achieved using a digital toolset.

Around the time I started experimenting with the idea of double exposures, albeit on a systems basis, rather than in the darkroom. I realised that I could process two distinct and separate geometries with a single colour palette and use one to overlay and modulate the other, allowing for a fairly rigid base geometry to become far looser and more abstracted.

beBop uses this idea to punctuate its moderately formal grid with individual notes, or eyes, that dominate the image and break it out of the rigidity of its underlying structure.

People tell me it reminds them of Munch's scream, but I think it’s more joyful than that, albeit with a darkly psychedelic twist.
