Eight Ball is available in two variations: cadmium base and deep carmine.
About Eight Ball
I drew Eight ball after a long summer break in the Catalan region of Spain, I guess it was my third or fourth visit to the country, and of course I couldn’t help but revisit the Miro Foundation in Barcelona while I was there.
Some part of that trip, and the extraordinary mercurial Calder fountain exhibited there, no doubt found it’s way into this study, which uses a more overt 3d space to hang loosely described elements alongside a series of almost calligraphic black marks.
By pure chance the image threw up a figurative 8 near its centre, which seemed redolent of the numbers used on pool balls, so in many ways I think the work named itself Eight Ball.
I made the silver base version with the blues and coppers first, followed by a more chromatic deep red study.
My kid's strongest memory of the trip is of a video piece, looped on repeat, in which a man plays a grand piano outdoors, striking the keys with his clenched fists, whilst a woman, standing on top of the piano, throws broad beans at him from a wicker basket.
It remains unclear what the exact intent of the piece is, but it seemed a beautiful response to Miro's completely unique way of working.
