About Spinnaker
One of the challenges of this new website has been to recall, and write about, each of the works to be included. There's a risk of a certain kind of groundhog day permeating the descriptions and explanations, that I'm keen to avoid.
That said, I also think it seems right that the artist should be able to shed a little light and perspective on what's going on, if only in a fairly loose way. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to have to write a few liner notes here and there.
Spinnaker, like Radial ONE before it, takes its energy from the idea of three movements, 120 degrees apart, travelling in a kind of perpetual motion around the toroid, or circle. The maths involved in getting this to work seemed incredibly hard to me at the time. No doubt students of pure Maths could have resolved all the issues easily, but I struggled with working out how to bring the components into balance over the three cycles, as opposed to the far simpler maths underlying studies with either two or four sections.
I wanted the geometry to resolve in such a way that there would appear to be 6 movements, three key moves, and three interstitial sections, combining with an energy that would seem to naturally push them, or rotate them, around the disc. I hope the final solution seems effortless in its execution.
The resulting curves and motion in the linework seemed to me to be redolent of a spinnaker, the prow sail that you'll see on any number of yachts and dinghies, afloat on a summer's day down in Cornwall, catching the breeze as they speed across the tops of the glittering breakers.
The silver variant seems more overtly Op, exposing the bones of the underlying geometry more explicitly, whilst the colour work of this cerulean study, to some extent, obscures some of that minimalism in favour of a high contrast study in pinks and greens, the colour of tulips in late Spring, to my mind.

Spinnaker / cerulean aegis is a metallic Lambda photographic print, optionally mounted to Plexiglass, laser cut to shape, and fitted with a hidden subframe, ready to install.
Work can be supplied unmounted and ready to frame if you’d prefer.
The work is individually signed and numbered verso, with both a unique catalogue raisonné number and the edition number for guaranteed authenticity.
