Artist in residence, Spring 2023

I've been gifted an amazing opportunity to work as an artist in residence at the Centre for Print Research at UWE this Spring.

The CFPR has an amazing array of traditional and high tech print making technologies in a large facility on the Frenchay campus in North Bristol. The term print making is used in it’s broadest possible sense here, and includes 3d printing for ceramic and glass editions, 3d CNC routing of metals and plastics, laser cutting and 2.5d printing for low relief studies on paper and plastics, alongside screen printing and intaglio processes, amongst many other possibilities.

The first edition I’m working on comprises a new geometry, a sculpture perhaps, realised in 3d as a virtual maquette, that is then printed as a set of 3d PLA components. These will form the positive image for a mould and burn out process, similar to lost wax casting, in which the model is supplanted with molten glass. Ultimately leading to a modular glass sculpture formed from clear and golden glass.

I hope the piece will talk about the spring, regeneration, growth and nature, using ideas around seed growth as the core for the geometry and abstraction. I’ll look forward to posting some more images of the work as it progresses.
