Mondial and Ascension are two quite disparate variations from a series of drawings I made around 2014.
About Mondial
Mondial takes the idea of encapsulating a mathematically coherent sequence of geometrical progressions within a singular toroid form.
In that sense it can be viewed as a microcosm of a particular world, totally contained within its own logical form, hence Mondial.
There’s a play on Mondrian here too of course, with the predominantly red, yellow and blue palette and the angular nature of the drawn forms.
I made this study first, and then drew Ascension as a natural progression, one circular and one square form, to contrast the ideas I was working with.
Looking back, I think these two studies are the precursor to the Klint series, which also explores a more overtly angular drawing style.
