Sun : Moon : Cosmos {67} installed at a collector’s home in Swindon
Delighted to have been sent this great new photo of my Sun : Moon : Cosmos {67} work, recently installed in a collector’s home in Swindon.
Flow / silver base, commissioned by a collector in Ireland
Lovely to be commissioned to produce a Flow / silver base edition for a collector in Ireland. It’s an early work, and a really directional one too. Just a couple left in the edition of 8 now.
Halcyon / dark carnival and Revolver / oxidised at Catto, June 2019
Lovely to get a new commission to produce a pair of drawings for an Austrian collector this June. These two pieces, Halcyon and Revolver are both 120cm square.
Stellify / TWO / cerise glaze commission, May 2018
Great to have an opportunity to revisit my 2017 Stellify / TWO drawing this spring. Commissioned with a silver / lilac cutout central core, as opposed to the original yellow / gold component.
Kinetic / double quad / commission, April 2017
Great to be commissioned to produce a new Kinetic / double quad set, some ten years after the work was exhibited at ‘Transistor at the Southbank’. An interesting opportunity to revisit some of these older pieces.
Systematic variations
Thought I'd post a couple of new studies, test pieces really, that may well form part of a larger new series of variations. I'm working with the title SysVar or Systematic Variations, and am greatly enjoying working out a series of new methods for creating the inter related works, that may form the backbone of a new print folio. That's the outline plan anyway…
Psyche / D, Jan 2017
Thought I’d post two variants of a new drawing I’ve been working on, entitled Psyche / D. I’ve been going for a kind of millefiori glass thing recently, perhaps the best way to think of it is as if Takashei Murakami had grown up in Murano, or if Lino Tagliapietra had spent the summer of ’67 in San Francisco. That’s the kind of the energy I’m trying to channel here…
An apartment in Bath, Summer 2016
Earlier in the Spring I was commissioned to make five new pieces for a beautifully refurbished apartment in Bath. It's been a great opportunity to create some really large works at up to 240cm / 8ft wide, designed specifically to illuminate this fabulous Georgian home.
These photos were taken on the install day, so the apartment is only partially furnished...
beBop 45
As the date for my upcoming show at Catto Gallery nears, I find myself in that strange hiatus between completing the artwork, and awaiting it’s return from the framers. In the meantime, I thought I’d post one of the new drawings here – beBop 45.
Ascension / Re:MiX
New year / new post. I thought I’d start the year by posting a new image from a collection of twenty or so new works that I’m putting together for a solo show at the Catto Gallery, Hampstead. The show is set to open in March 2015.
This piece is a geometry that takes on some of the sculptural ideas of the Radial series and combines them with the squared form of Myriad. Titled as an homage to John Coltrane’s Ascension recordings, the colours spiral chaotically outward, and hopefully take flight as they spin towards the edge.
Elemental
I’ve been working on some new images, and editing some of the pieces I put together in the second half of 2013, ahead of the Battersea AAF, which opens in a few weeks, on Weds 12th March. This piece is one of six or more new pieces I’ll be exhibiting on stand J10 with the Transistor project, an artists group I often work with. We’re putting together a new website, the 4th iteration since we started in 2005, and I’m looking forward to being able to post more news about that shortly.
Faster looser
Alongside a number of other projects, I’ve been experimenting with some faster and looser methods for working. Back in 2005 it was at the core of my practice to complete pieces fast, and in so doing hope that the drawings would contain some vestige of a kind of live performance. That idea of speed, going faster and looser, has largely been lost in recent years, as the minutiae of the edit has come to dominate the process. Through a fantastic piece of serendipity, I have stumbled across a production facility in LA, where I can get my images processed much much faster. There’s a lot to be said for it…
Varnishing Day, RWA Open 2013
I misunderstood the invitation for the RWA’s annual ‘Varnishing Day’ lunch, so sadly missed the artist’s lunch and preview. Made it in with the locals for the opening though. Really pleased to find my work ‘Radial / THREE / pearlescent’ hanging in the main gallery, just across from Anna Gillespie’s fabulous small bronze ‘The Ghost of Summer’.
On Paper, James Freeman Gallery
“It is one of the most basic artist’s materials. Sketches, ideas, plans, doodles, prints, photos and phone numbers… they all happen on paper. And so, this September, we are pleased to present a show of eight artists focusing exactly on that. On Paper.” James Freeman 2013
Shimmer
There’s a thought, that somewhere amongst the geometry I originally used for Flow, there must be more to discover, part of that exploration has surfaced as this new series, working title Shimmer, which may or may not ever see the light of day. An initial new image from the series is posted here and on Flickr.
Lumen at Artshow Busan 2013
Just got this image of Lumen / lacquered kandy from James Freeman at the end of Artshow Busan. Great to have the work exhibited there…
Myriad / LP
I’ve been working on a new series, entitled Myriad, and thought I’d post a few images online. I think they’re just about ready to view, although I may kick them around a little more this autumn. In due course, I’ll edition a couple as square pieces, with knocked out centres, perhaps at 70cm sq and 120cm sq. I hope they’re redolent of a record sleeve, the generic kind where you have to read the label to know what the disc is.
Hong Kong AAF / 2013
I’m delighted to be showing some new work at the Hong Kong AAF / 2013, with the Mark Jason Gallery. If you’re in the area, and you’d like a complimentary ticket to visit the fair, please email me at chuck (dot) elliott (at) btinternet (dot) com, and I’ll have a ticket put aside for you.
