Hong Kong AAF 2014
Good to have six recent works on show with Camilla Giradot’s Art Movement, at this year’s Hong Kong AAF. If you’d like to see more details about the event, the fair’s website is here – http://affordableartfair.com/hongkong/ – and Milly’s project, The Art Movement, is online here – http://www.art-movement.com/
Shine, Bath Fashion Week 2014
Fabulous to be included at ‘Shine’, part of Bath Fashion Week 2014. Guest speakers include the legendary Barbara Hulanicki, founder of BIBA, and Kaffe Fassett at The American Museum. My own pieces are displayed at The Abbey Hotel, North Parade, Bath, courtesy of Bath based curator Jessica Lloyd-Smith. The event runs from 24th April until 18th May.
London Book Fair, 8-10 April 2014
The London Book Fair is delighted to announce that this year’s fair will feature the first ever literary ‘pop-up’ version of The Club at The Ivy, the prestigious London private members’ club.
Curated by James Freeman, a selection of work will be exhibited in the pop up Club at the Ivy, including a number of my own pieces, after the recent two man show at James Freeman Gallery, with noted painter Matthew Small.
Transistor at the Battersea AAF, Spring 2014
The Transistor Project is, once again, taking a stand at the Battersea AAF, on stand J10. Dates are Wednesday 12th to Sunday 16th March. Alongside my own work, we’re very excited to be showing new work by Guy Denning, Frank Elliott, Harriet White, Conor Wilson and Tristram Aver.
Touch / Screen : Chuck Elliott and Matthew Small at the James Freeman Gallery
Look around you in a public place, and almost everyone will be somewhere else, lost in their own virtual otherwhere. This is the digital future: absent communication. Touch/Screen sets out to look at that gap we fall into between the physical and the virtual, using the work of two very different artists: Matthew Small, a painter of raw tactile portraits of urban youth, and Chuck Elliott, a digital artist who gives structure and colour to the digital ether. Somewhere in between is where we spend an increasing part of our lives – somewhere between touch and the screen.
Elemental
I’ve been working on some new images, and editing some of the pieces I put together in the second half of 2013, ahead of the Battersea AAF, which opens in a few weeks, on Weds 12th March. This piece is one of six or more new pieces I’ll be exhibiting on stand J10 with the Transistor project, an artists group I often work with. We’re putting together a new website, the 4th iteration since we started in 2005, and I’m looking forward to being able to post more news about that shortly.

10 Opening Exhibitions to Watch / MutualArt
Mutual Art feature on TouchScreen, Matthew Small & Chuck Elliott, James Freeman Gallery, 02/2014. Look around you in a public place, and almost everyone will be somewhere else, lost...
Beaux Arts Gallery, February 2014
I delivered some new pieces to The Beaux Arts Gallery, Bath, today, for a group show opening next week. Good to see some of Anna Gillespie’s work there, hoping it may remain throughout the show. Opening next week, the show runs for a month or so, and the gallery has fifteen of my pieces on show, or available to view, during the run.
Utopia / Opening night at The UNIT
On the 18th December 2013 we opened the doors to UTOPIA, an international group exhibition in support of Shelter. Thankyou to all who came to see the show - it has been a runaway success! Welcome to Paradise. Videography by Laurence Howe. Copyright The Unit London 2013.
Faster looser
Alongside a number of other projects, I’ve been experimenting with some faster and looser methods for working. Back in 2005 it was at the core of my practice to complete pieces fast, and in so doing hope that the drawings would contain some vestige of a kind of live performance. That idea of speed, going faster and looser, has largely been lost in recent years, as the minutiae of the edit has come to dominate the process. Through a fantastic piece of serendipity, I have stumbled across a production facility in LA, where I can get my images processed much much faster. There’s a lot to be said for it…
Tracer / WIP / work in progress
Recent posts seem to have been a bit ‘show heavy’, contrary to my best intention to use this blog to publish a little more of the work that never gets past the studio door. With that in mind, these are some images I’ve been experimenting with, based on the idea of tracing light.
Varnishing Day, RWA Open 2013
I misunderstood the invitation for the RWA’s annual ‘Varnishing Day’ lunch, so sadly missed the artist’s lunch and preview. Made it in with the locals for the opening though. Really pleased to find my work ‘Radial / THREE / pearlescent’ hanging in the main gallery, just across from Anna Gillespie’s fabulous small bronze ‘The Ghost of Summer’.
WGSN 2013
Justin Hammond (director of My Life in Art) has curated an inaugural show of my work at WGSN in central London. For the next three months, their building will be used to showcase five larger works, including Torsion / indigo lacquer and Blast FIRST.
WGSN specialise in forecasting fashion trends for the coming seasons, and as such, we’re hoping there may be some interesting cross pollination between the two disciplines, fashion and fine art, perhaps especially in the area of colour. It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of the project…
RWA Open 2013
Good to have been selected for the Open this year, although, at the time of posting this, it may be ‘selected not hung’. Fingers crossed for a good spot in the galleries.
The RWA Open runs from 24th November to 26th January. More information is available online here http://www.rwa.org.uk/whats-on/events/2013/11/161-annual-open-exhibition-events/
Moniker Art Fair, October 2013
Really pleased that The Future Tense are showing my work at the Moniker Art Fair, running alongside Frieze this weekend. Previously I’ve shown work with them at Spectra 1, Shoreditch and MTV ReDefine in Dallas, Texas.
New York AAF, October 2013
Mark Jason is heading over to NYC, with a pair of Radial pieces to exhibit. Radial / 3 / kandy black, and Radial / 3/ pearlescent. If you’re stateside, and you’d like to attend the preview, drop me a line, and I’ll see if I can get you on the list.
London Design Festival, 2013
As part of London Design Festival 2013, I’m exhibiting Collider / gilded mandala, at Go Modern on King’s Road. The shop features contemporary furniture, and has been kind enough to also host the Collider piece for the event.
On Paper, James Freeman Gallery
“It is one of the most basic artist’s materials. Sketches, ideas, plans, doodles, prints, photos and phone numbers… they all happen on paper. And so, this September, we are pleased to present a show of eight artists focusing exactly on that. On Paper.” James Freeman 2013
