Patreon Experimental Print Club, edition #3 posted
After a surprisingly complex assembly process, the 3rd piece for my Patreon Experimental Print Club was editioned on the Winter Solstice and sent out to my Print Club members shortly after. Entitled R2 / helios helianthus, it’s the 3rd piece that I’ve made exclusively for my Print Club members.
Psyche / D, Jan 2017
Thought I’d post two variants of a new drawing I’ve been working on, entitled Psyche / D. I’ve been going for a kind of millefiori glass thing recently, perhaps the best way to think of it is as if Takashei Murakami had grown up in Murano, or if Lino Tagliapietra had spent the summer of ’67 in San Francisco. That’s the kind of the energy I’m trying to channel here…
Flow 8VO / 3 min edit
I've been working on the second edition for the print club, which I hope will make an interesting addition to the collection. After being asked to re-edit my Flow / 8VO screen work for the annual Autumn Open at the Royal West of England Academy, I realised I could use the resulting 3 minute edit as the next piece for the club. Edition 2. Which means the R2 / helios piece I'm also currently working on will become Edition 3, to be completed shortly…
An apartment in Bath, Summer 2016
Earlier in the Spring I was commissioned to make five new pieces for a beautifully refurbished apartment in Bath. It's been a great opportunity to create some really large works at up to 240cm / 8ft wide, designed specifically to illuminate this fabulous Georgian home.
These photos were taken on the install day, so the apartment is only partially furnished...
Happy Christmas, 2015
I thought it might be a good time to send out a blog post on my Patreon page, to mark the end of the year, and let you know a little more about what I've been working on. Maybe you'll be able to find a quiet moment over the holidays to have look at some of the content, here's hoping!
BeBop / an early days sketch
I've been clearing through old work on my hard drives, as I prepare to move to a faster machine next week. I'm hoping it'll allow me to work more flexibly this autumn. As a result, I've been re-visiting a vast number of studies in progress, that have been reworked along the way, and ultimately become quite different pieces in their final iterations.
Generator 2012 / a short film
A little before the launch of my 'Generator / process and progress' show in Nov 2012, the Catto Gallery commissioned a short online film, made in my studio during the run up to the opening. You can view it online here…
Klint / reDux / A new series of work for the Beautiful Crime vs Microsoft Surface 3 exhibition
For the Surface 3 vs Beautiful Crime show, I've been riffing on a new idea, that combines the ghost of a previous study, Vortura, with my love of Japanese paper folding, notably the crane, digital print making, and the classic designs of the Le Klint studio, a widely celebrated lighting design company, who perfectly combined those two most critical of materials, light and geometry, from 1943 onwards.
beBop 45
As the date for my upcoming show at Catto Gallery nears, I find myself in that strange hiatus between completing the artwork, and awaiting it’s return from the framers. In the meantime, I thought I’d post one of the new drawings here – beBop 45.
Ascension / Re:MiX
New year / new post. I thought I’d start the year by posting a new image from a collection of twenty or so new works that I’m putting together for a solo show at the Catto Gallery, Hampstead. The show is set to open in March 2015.
This piece is a geometry that takes on some of the sculptural ideas of the Radial series and combines them with the squared form of Myriad. Titled as an homage to John Coltrane’s Ascension recordings, the colours spiral chaotically outward, and hopefully take flight as they spin towards the edge.
Elemental
I’ve been working on some new images, and editing some of the pieces I put together in the second half of 2013, ahead of the Battersea AAF, which opens in a few weeks, on Weds 12th March. This piece is one of six or more new pieces I’ll be exhibiting on stand J10 with the Transistor project, an artists group I often work with. We’re putting together a new website, the 4th iteration since we started in 2005, and I’m looking forward to being able to post more news about that shortly.
Faster looser
Alongside a number of other projects, I’ve been experimenting with some faster and looser methods for working. Back in 2005 it was at the core of my practice to complete pieces fast, and in so doing hope that the drawings would contain some vestige of a kind of live performance. That idea of speed, going faster and looser, has largely been lost in recent years, as the minutiae of the edit has come to dominate the process. Through a fantastic piece of serendipity, I have stumbled across a production facility in LA, where I can get my images processed much much faster. There’s a lot to be said for it…
Tracer / WIP / work in progress
Recent posts seem to have been a bit ‘show heavy’, contrary to my best intention to use this blog to publish a little more of the work that never gets past the studio door. With that in mind, these are some images I’ve been experimenting with, based on the idea of tracing light.
Varnishing Day, RWA Open 2013
I misunderstood the invitation for the RWA’s annual ‘Varnishing Day’ lunch, so sadly missed the artist’s lunch and preview. Made it in with the locals for the opening though. Really pleased to find my work ‘Radial / THREE / pearlescent’ hanging in the main gallery, just across from Anna Gillespie’s fabulous small bronze ‘The Ghost of Summer’.
On Paper, James Freeman Gallery
“It is one of the most basic artist’s materials. Sketches, ideas, plans, doodles, prints, photos and phone numbers… they all happen on paper. And so, this September, we are pleased to present a show of eight artists focusing exactly on that. On Paper.” James Freeman 2013
Shimmer
There’s a thought, that somewhere amongst the geometry I originally used for Flow, there must be more to discover, part of that exploration has surfaced as this new series, working title Shimmer, which may or may not ever see the light of day. An initial new image from the series is posted here and on Flickr.
Myriad / LP
I’ve been working on a new series, entitled Myriad, and thought I’d post a few images online. I think they’re just about ready to view, although I may kick them around a little more this autumn. In due course, I’ll edition a couple as square pieces, with knocked out centres, perhaps at 70cm sq and 120cm sq. I hope they’re redolent of a record sleeve, the generic kind where you have to read the label to know what the disc is.
